Recent studies of mitochondrial DNA of different species of bears have shown that all living polar bears originate from a single population of brown bears that existed about 120,000 years ago in Alaska. This dating is too young to take it without objection.
A new study shows limitations of the method used and provides new estimates of the age of formation of polar bears - about 600,000 years ago.
